The Search for Animal Chin is the first skate video with a real story. Stacy Peralta cast the Bones Brigade, Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain and Rodney Mullen, as themselves on a road trip to find Won Ton “Animal” Chin, a mythical old-timer who stood for skating purely for the fun of it.
The plot is thin on purpose. It carries a message that skateboarding was losing its soul to contests and money, and it frames skating that still holds up. The finale on the Chin ramp, a huge vert ramp with a spine built for the film, is one of the most recognizable sessions in skate history.
Chin was a hit at the height of the late-80s boom, and its “skate for fun” message has outlived nearly every trick in it.
