Wheels of Fire was Santa Cruz’s answer to the Powell Peralta videos that ruled VCRs in the mid-80s. Where the Bones Brigade tapes leaned on polish and storylines, Santa Cruz went rawer, with a team that skated pools, vert ramps and the growing street scene.
The video catches the late-80s Santa Cruz roster at full speed, including riders like Jeff Grosso and Jason Jessee, whose aggressive transition skating defined the brand’s image. It’s a snapshot of Santa Cruz standing as one of the big three board makers of the era, alongside Powell Peralta and Vision.
Wheels of Fire set the stage for Santa Cruz’s more famous follow-up two years later, Streets on Fire.
