Public Domain is where Powell Peralta’s videos started catching up with street skating. Stacy Peralta still directed and the Bones Brigade still ripped vert, but the parts people rewind happen on the street.
Ray Barbee’s section is the standout: smooth, playful street skating built on no-complies and flow, showing a completely different side of skateboarding from the hard-charging vert of the time. Mike Vallely brought the opposite energy, an aggressive street style that made him one of the most influential street skaters of the late 80s.
The vert side delivered too, with Tony Hawk pushing his trick list further. Public Domain captures a changing of the guard, the moment street skating stopped being a side show and started becoming the main event.
