Ban This was Powell Peralta’s big video for 1989, and it feels like a company holding onto a scene that was changing fast. Stacy Peralta directed again, this time with a darker, grittier tone than the playful Bones Brigade tapes before it.
Tony Hawk’s vert skating is the anchor, as progressive as anything filmed at the time, alongside the rest of the Bones Brigade. Street skating takes up more of the running time than ever, a sign of how quickly the kids buying boards were moving from ramps to curbs, ledges and handrails.
Within a few years of Ban This, much of the Bones Brigade had moved on and smaller rider-owned companies were taking over. That makes it one of the closing chapters of Powell’s golden era, and a record of vert’s last stretch at the top of skateboarding.
