Alien Workshop started in 1990 in Dayton, Ohio, founded by Chris Carter, Mike Hill and Neil Blender, and Memory Screen was its first video. It sounded and looked like nothing else in skateboarding at the time.
Where California companies were making upbeat, colorful tapes, Memory Screen was eerie and abstract, full of strange imagery, sci-fi mood and art-school editing that matched the brand’s alien graphics. The skating came from an early team that included a young Rob Dyrdek, a Dayton local who would ride for the company for years.
Memory Screen set the tone for everything Alien Workshop did after it: skate videos could be strange, moody and artistic, and still rip.
