Photosynthesis regularly lands on lists of the greatest skate videos ever made, and it’s the high point of Alien Workshop’s run. Released in 2000, it pairs the brand’s moody, artistic style with one of the strongest teams of the era.
Josh Kalis brought the Philadelphia street style he was famous for, Jason Dill and Anthony Van Engelen added raw, fearless parts, and Rob Dyrdek and Fred Gall rounded out the Alien crew. Riders from Habitat, the company’s new sister brand, including Kerry Getz and Tim O’Connor, appear as well.
The video captured East Coast and California street skating at a turning point and did it with real atmosphere. Twenty-plus years later, Photosynthesis is still the tape people point to when they talk about skate videos as more than trick lists.
