Santa Cruz’s Streets on Fire is best remembered for one clip: Natas Kaupas spinning on top of a fire hydrant, a trick that became one of the most famous images in street skating. Natas was one of the first true street pros, treating curbs, walls and city furniture as terrain before most companies took street skating seriously.
The video, a follow-up to Wheels of Fire, shows Santa Cruz leaning into the street movement while keeping its roots in vert and pools. That mix makes it a snapshot of 1989, right as street skating was overtaking ramps as the heart of the sport.
Natas’s section alone earns Streets on Fire its place in skate history. His creative, anything-goes approach to the city shaped how a generation of street skaters looked at the world around them.
