Powell Peralta’s first video, directed by Stacy Peralta with Craig Stecyk, is widely credited as the tape that started the skate video era. It came out in 1984, just as home VCRs were catching on, and sold through skate shops and mail order in numbers nobody in skateboarding expected.
The format was simple: the Bones Brigade skating pools, ramps and freestyle, cut together with goofy skits. The roster reads like a hall of fame, with a teenage Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain, Alan Gelfand and freestyle wizard Rodney Mullen.
Its bigger legacy was the idea itself. Before the Video Show, most kids outside California only saw the pros in magazine photos. After it, they could watch tricks in motion, rewind them and try to learn them, and every board company started making videos of its own.
